UK’s £100M AI Biosecurity Lab Gets Up to £200M From OpenAI, Anthropic

The UK government announced on Saturday that it is establishing the AI Biosecurity Lab, a new organisation that will use frontier AI to strengthen the country's defences against biological threats. The government calls it the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation, backed by £100 million of public funding and up to £200 million in commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic.
The headline figure of up to £300 million mixes cash and in-kind support. OpenAI is providing £100 million in compute and model credits, along with trusted access to its most capable relevant models through its Rosalind Biodefense programme, while Anthropic is committing up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and technical support. The government did not say how those credits are valued or over what period they will be used.
Google DeepMind and the UK company Basecamp Research will join as research partners. Basecamp will provide access to its AI biology models, and DeepMind scientists will collaborate on research and look to provide trusted access to Gemini and specialised science models.
The government framed the lab as a response to risks that cut both ways. It said AI can speed up research and the discovery of medical countermeasures, but that increasingly capable systems also create new biological risks and could lower the barriers to harmful activity.
The lab's first work will focus on earlier detection of emerging biological threats and faster development of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures.
It will operate as an independent, non-profit organisation, modelled in part on the AI Security Institute, and will work alongside the UK Health Security Agency, the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. It will also work with the medicines regulator, the MHRA, on preparing for health emergencies and informing the regulation of AI-designed medicines. The government said it wants future funding to come from both public and philanthropic sources.
The announcement did not name a leader, location, staff size or launch date. It said details of a scientific advisory committee will follow later. It also did not say whether the lab will evaluate the models of the companies funding it, or what safeguards will keep it independent of them.
The lab follows a run of company support for UK AI safety work. Earlier this month, Nvidia pledged $250 million worth of computing resources over five years for UK AI security research, according to NewsBytes. Earlier in October, MI5's director general named AI-enabled bioweapons as the misuse risk he weighs most heavily, as AI Briefing News reported.
