How We Review AI Tools

Last updated: October 2026

Our AI Tools directory is editorially determined. Nobody pays to be listed, to rank higher, or to be described more favourably — and nobody can.

What gets listed

We list tools that are publicly available, actively maintained, and useful for a job our readers actually need done.

We do not list products that exist only as a waitlist or a landing page, tools with no usable version, or software that has been abandoned by its maker.

How we organise them

Tools are organised by the job you are trying to do rather than by the technology underneath. Someone looking for help summarising documents should not have to know whether the answer is a retrieval system, a long-context model or a browser extension.

Each tool sits in one primary category, and carries a pricing label of Free, Freemium, Paid or Open Source.

What we check

For every listing we verify:

  • **What the tool actually does**, tested or reviewed against the live product rather than its marketing copy.
  • **What it really costs**, including what the free tier genuinely allows before it stops being useful.
  • **Who it suits**, so the description is useful to someone deciding whether to try it.
  • **Whether it is still maintained**, because an abandoned tool with a polished website looks identical to a live one.

The one-line description on each listing is written by us. We do not publish vendor-supplied copy as though it were ours.

Last-checked dates

Every listing shows the date we last verified it against the live product. AI tools change pricing and capability frequently, and that date tells you how much weight to put on the details.

Listings are re-checked on a rolling basis, and sooner when we learn of a significant change.

Tools that are discontinued

When a tool is shut down, acquired and retired, or shows no sign of maintenance, we flag it rather than deleting it quietly. A reader who relied on that tool deserves to know what happened to it, and a directory that silently erases its dead entries is hiding useful information.

No paid placement

Listings are free. Submission does not guarantee inclusion.

We do not accept payment for placement, for ranking, or for a more favourable description. We do not use affiliate links in directory listings. If we ever introduce affiliate arrangements elsewhere on the site, we will disclose them clearly on the pages where they appear.

Submitting a tool

If you have built something that belongs in the directory, send us the product URL, a one-line description of the job it does, and the pricing model through our Contact page.

Reporting an error in a listing

If we have a tool's pricing, capability or status wrong — including if you are the vendor — tell us through our Contact page and we will verify and update it.
